JGSGB DNA SIG - 9 Jan 2022 2pm – with Gil Bardige – “Help! I Just Got My DNA Results and I’m confused!” – Part 1

Dear all,

Thanks for your feedback in the last JGSGB meeting of 2021. We are now having a (hopefully) well-deserved break until the new year.

Have a great Christmas if you celebrate or a great belated Chanukah if you don't, and either way a Happy New Year for 2022!

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is from the JGSGB DNA Special Interest Group (DNA SIG) by Zoom, open to all JGSGB members.

• Date: Sunday 9 January 2022
• Time: 14:00 London; 09:00 New York; 16:00 Jerusalem; 15:00 Switzerland
• Title: “Help! I Just Got My DNA Results and I’m confused!” (Updated - Beginner/Intermediate Level) – Part 1
• Subtitle: Prioritize your match lists, get organized and thus reduce the stress and confusion
• Speaker: Gil Bardige
• Description: Geared to beginners and even more to all those who have tried to make use of their DNA matches but just can't make it work. If you are overwhelmed by the thousands of cousins listed who have different surnames and different ancestral towns, this is for YOU. This presentation will provide specific guidance on how to use DNA as an effective tool in your genealogy tool belt; including, if there is time, a brief case study that outlines the process. This presentation will show specific examples from the 4 major testing companies to clarify ethnicity estimates. Then, more importantly, we will look at detailed views of what realistic matches look like even with endogamy, and the proper specific steps to take for prioritization then making contact. We want the match's help with your family tree. At the end of the presentation, you will be able to say, “now I get it ... I know what to do.”

About Gil Bardige
Gil Bardige lives in the Columbus Ohio area. A graduate of the New York Institute of Technology, Gil is recently retired after a long career in air conditioning and refrigeration, most recently as a National Business Development Leader for Trane.

At the “instruction” of his mother, Gil began his genealogy adventure in 1979 with 54 people in his tree. Today his family tree, including Mishpocha, is over 2000 people tracing four branches back to his 5th great-grandfathers born about 1740. His families arrived in Chicago in the early 1900s.

For the last 13+ years Gil has expanded his knowledge base to genetic genealogy, testing at each of the four major DNA companies, and he currently manages three Y-DNA projects at FamilyTreeDNA as a Volunteer Administrator. He loves to help people manage their expectations and begin to remove confusion from the DNA results whether it’s Y-DNA, mtDNA, or Autosomal DNA.

Gil is the new Chair of the Genealogy Committee of the Columbus Jewish Historical Society (JGS). He has spoken at a number of local events and international conferences, including at IAJGS in Orlando, Cleveland, Virtual San Diego and Virtual Philadelphia.

Gil is a firm believer that you can use DNA results as a tool in your genealogical research as it generates clues that can help people confirm/deny relationships. His speaking style is high energy (you won’t be bored) and he loves to take questions. People have said of his presentations, “Thank you, Gil, I am no longer confused!”

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A on the talk.

The invitation to register is below, but please keep it to yourself!

If you have problems joining please email chairman@jgsgb.org.uk, preferably in the 15 minutes before the meeting proper starts.

Free online history festival: Jewish life in small communities 15–25 March

From Hilary Thomas: "Connecting Small Histories” takes the bold step of drawing the footprint of Jewish life in what are now small or former communities across the United Kingdom. Through stories and memories, we identify the Jewish legacy in the local economies and culture, beginning with six very different locations, Eastbourne, St Annes, Bradford, Sunderland, Cumbria and Somerset. After almost twelve months of work, our History Festival begins the telling of these “Small Histories”, bringing both them and a wide selection of projects from our Heritage Hub to a wider public.   Over a series of daytime and evening events, our programme brings together storytellers, academics, Jewish heritage project teams, and volunteers to paint a picture of Jewish life and heritage spread wide across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We are inviting you to join us! Simply, click here to view the festival programme and to register your attendance. Best wishes, The Connecting Small Histories...
