JGSGB German SIG – Sun 5 Dec 2021 2pm – “Primary Jewish records in Austria Hungary” by Christina Kaul

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is a German Special Interest Group Meeting by Zoom.

• Date: Sunday 5 Dec 2021
• Time: 14:00 London; 09:00 New York; 16:00 Jerusalem; 07:00 Salt Lake City
• Title: “Primary Jewish records in Austria Hungary”
• Speaker: Christina Kaul
• Description: Our talk concerns Jewish records in Austria Hungary (Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia, Hungary). The sources cover Jewish community books, Familianten books and Catholic control books on Jewish inhabitants as well as Jewish conscriptions and land records. The talk will focus on primary records rather than secondary databases like JewishGen and thus allow researchers and family historians to go back further in time; for example, the 1651 census in Moravia includes Jewish communities and that in parts of Moravia Jewish land records are digitized going back as far as 1550.

After Christina’s talk, you will be able to ask her questions about it.

About Christina Kaul
Christina Kaul is a lawyer by profession currently working as a Trade Negotiator for the EU in Brussels. She is an active member of Familia Austria and has previously given talks to its membership. Founded in December 2008 it is a voluntary association, which promotes ancestral and family research in the area of the old Habsburg monarchy.

Hopefully after the talk, we will also have time to discuss some of the new developments and recent discoveries in German-Jewish genealogy. As ever, the presentation from the meeting will be made available after the meeting, and the meeting will end with an opportunity for you to ask any questions about your own family history research. It would be helpful if you could email them in advance to jeanette.r.rosenberg@googlemail.com before the meeting.

JGSGB German SIG future meetings are: 6 March 2022, 12 June 2022 (delayed 1 week due to Shavuot), 4 September 2022 and 4 December 2022. Please add them to your calendar.

JGSGB Specialist Talk – Sun May 8th 2022 2pm – “The Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls, Women and Children” by Dr Martin Walsh

Our next Sunday meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is a specialist talk by Zoom. • Date: Sunday May 8th 2022 • Time: 14:00 London; 09:00 New York; 16:00 Jerusalem; 15:00 Switzerland • Title: “The Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls, Women and Children” • Speaker: Dr Martin Walsh • Description: Almost all Jewish women entered England through London’s East End, where a cross-section of the poorer and working-class Jewish community resided. It was a dangerous and overcrowded place with its warren of lanes and criminality; most noted for the Jack the Ripper murders of the late 1880s. Many of the promises of marriage and employment never materialised. Worse still, some of these women arrived in London only to end up on the next boat to South America as part of the white slave trade. Even in London there was a real risk of these women ending up in the clutches of brothel keepers when the promised employment fell through and family members were not there to p...
