JGSGB Dutch & Sephardi SIG - 19 Sep 2021 2pm – with Bernard Miller – “Sephardic-Nordic-Noir – Part 2”

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is from the JGSGB Dutch & Sephardi Special Interest Group (D&S SIG) by Zoom.

• Date: Sunday 19 September 2021
• Time 14:00 London; 09:00 New York; 16:00 Jerusalem; 07:00 Salt Lake City
• Title: Sephardic-Nordic-Noir – Part 2
• Speaker: Bernard Miller
• Description: For most people, Scandinavia is still not a geographical region in which we expect to find Sephardic relatives. Even after finding many, since Bernard first introduced us to some of his Scandinavian Sephardic family finds last year, more have appeared and continue to surprise him. Their origins, the paths by which they ended up in Scandinavia, the subsequent history of the Jews there and their geographical spread are just as amazing, as is the fact that when Jews were initially allowed to settle in Denmark, Sephardim were admitted and Ashkenazim were specifically excluded. If you enjoy Nordic Noir mysteries, join us again for the second episode. The plot is definitely thickening.

About Bernard Miller
Bernard Miller, who declared his nationality on the 2011 and 2021 census returns to be ‘Euro-Cockney’, has spent much of his life doing research in one form or another. Living in many countries and working in many languages and several different fields seems to him to be a good basis for applying that research base to his own genealogy. To add to the unexpected genealogical connections, in the past few months, several DNA matches have turned up with people in Denmark to whom he has not yet found family links which would explain the matches. He is now contacting some of the people to try to find out just how they are connected.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A on the talk.

The invitation to register is below, but please keep it to yourself!

If you have problems joining please email chairman@jgsgb.org.uk, preferably in the 15 minutes before the meeting proper starts.

The contemporary reassessments, with their awareness of emerging techniques that have the potential to extract fresh insights from source materials both old and new, show how our understanding of what it means to be Jewish is continuing to expand.  Conference convenors: Dr F...

JewishGen announcement: Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection

JewishGen announcement: "We are pleased to announce a partnership between JewishGen.org and Dr. Dan Hirschberg, resulting in the Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection.   As a result of this agreement, records that have been transcribed and compiled by Dr. Hirschberg will be made freely available to JewishGen researchers.   All of the records are from Kraków, Poland (in the Austrian province of Galicia before WWI), including Kazimierz and Podgórze (today, districts of Kraków). Thus far, more than 160,000 records have been uploaded, which include census records, vital records, marriage intentions/banns records, along with progressive and religious marriage records.   Images of most of the records are available online, although search results do not currently link to the images. New database for Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery

From David Shulman: What better way to start the New Year other than with a brand new database! A newly-created searchable database, hosted by JCR-UK, is now up and running. The database, relating to burials at Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery, covers the period 1852 through July 2020 and contains nearly 1,800 burial records, with some 1,470 headstone images. It can be accessed at: https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Cemeteries/Cardiff/Highfield_Road_Cemetery/Cemetery_Menu.htm Search results also include coordinates for each individual grave (accurate to about one metre) together with a link to a Google satellite image of the cemetery showing the location of the grave. The creation of the database is part of a project to digitalise the records of all Jewish cemeteries in South Wales and complements a major project by the Jewish History Association of South Wales to collect reminiscences and artefacts and physical items from the numerous Jewish communities in South Wales (...
