JGSGB Chilterns RG - Tuesday 4 May 2021 7.30pm – Bernard Miller – “Crypto Jewish Governors & Viceroys of Portuguese India"

Due to the bank holiday there will be no Sunday meeting on 2 May, but coming next in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is a meeting from the JGSGB Chilterns Regional Group (RG) by Zoom.

Here is the information for this meeting:

• Date: Tuesday 4 May 2021
• Time: 19:30 London (note, 14:30 New York, 11:30 San Francisco, 21:30 Jerusalem)
• Title: Crypto Jewish Governors & Viceroys of Portuguese India
• Speaker: Bernard Miller
• Description: The first one seemed like an aberration. The second might have been a mistake but by the time he had found half a dozen, there seemed to be a pattern. Several lines of Bernard Miller’s Sephardic ancestors whom he had traced back to 15th- and 16th-century Portugal seemed to contain Governors and Viceroys of Portuguese India. Like so much in genealogy, initially it appeared counter-intuitive.

Many of the individuals appointed by the Portuguese Crown to represent it and govern its colonies came from Jewish families which had converted to Christianity, some well before the Inquisition for financial and political advantage and favour, others because they were left with little or no option when the Inquisition was launched.

Join us to learn more about this little studied aspect of a relatively understudied period of history and share one even greater surprise about some of the Portuguese appointees who were intended to impose Christianity on the Indian sub-continent.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A and discussion on the talk.

About Bernard Miller
====================
Bernard Miller, whose interest in genealogy is relatively recent, has lived and worked in many countries around the world and made many friends. To his surprise, genealogy has shown that some of his best friends are distant, sometimes very distant, relatives. His background is in architecture, planning, economics, politics research and languages. His interests are much wider.

The invitation to register is below, but please keep it to yourself!

If you have problems joining please email chairman@jgsgb.org.uk, preferably in the 15 minutes before the meeting proper starts. In particular, if you get stuck in a registration loop, you may want to upgrade the version of Zoom on your PC, but please email me and I can help you through this…

Free online history festival: Jewish life in small communities 15–25 March

From Hilary Thomas: "Connecting Small Histories” takes the bold step of drawing the footprint of Jewish life in what are now small or former communities across the United Kingdom. Through stories and memories, we identify the Jewish legacy in the local economies and culture, beginning with six very different locations, Eastbourne, St Annes, Bradford, Sunderland, Cumbria and Somerset. After almost twelve months of work, our History Festival begins the telling of these “Small Histories”, bringing both them and a wide selection of projects from our Heritage Hub to a wider public.   Over a series of daytime and evening events, our programme brings together storytellers, academics, Jewish heritage project teams, and volunteers to paint a picture of Jewish life and heritage spread wide across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We are inviting you to join us! Simply, click here to view the festival programme and to register your attendance. Best wishes, The Connecting Small Histories...
