JGSGB EE SIG - Nov 29th 2020 2pm – with Dr. Janette Silverman – “An Epic Journey: Eastern Europe in 22 Days”

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is an extra meeting from the JGSGB Eastern European Special Interest Group (EE SIG) by Zoom.

This is the third of three speakers on Eastern European ancestral tourism in November, making it Ancestral Tourism month!

There is also another Polish Ancestral Tourism meeting coming soon in December … More details about this and subsequent meetings will follow in the coming weeks.

Here is the information for the next meeting:

Date: Sunday Nov 29th 2020
Time: 14:00 London (note, 09:00 New York, 06:00 San Francisco, 07:00 Arizona)
Title: “An Epic Journey: Eastern Europe in 22 Days”

Speaker: Dr. Janette Silverman

Description: In 2018, Janette Silverman and five members of her research team headed off to visit places where Jews once lived and do onsite research in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Hungary. As you can imagine, the trip was filled with challenges but also resulted in some amazing finds. Janette will take you on a recap of some of the high points and the major challenges. Just as a hint, one of the challenges was how to find vegetarian food in cultures which are very heavy on meat offerings.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A and discussion on the talk.

About Dr. Janette Silverman

Janette Silverman is a professional genealogist, working for AncestryProGenealogists, the division of Ancestry.com that does private client research. She heads up a team of 9 genealogists specializing in Eastern European and Jewish research.

Janette began her genealogical journey more than 35 years ago as a hobby with her father. What started as a hobby quickly became more as she immersed herself in Jewish history, both as a student and a teacher. Janette served as a Board member of the IAJGS, was president of a Jewish Genealogy Society; lead co-chair of the 2016 IAJGS conference and for over 6 years was the Coordinator of the JewishGen Ukraine SIG. She has worked with private clients since 2004.

Janette holds master's and doctorate degrees in Jewish studies from Spertus Institute in Chicago. Her doctoral dissertation, “In Living Memory,” explored the experiences of four Jewish families in Europe and the United States, contextualizing the micro-history of those families within the more global historical world. Her areas of research expertise include Eastern European Jews, the Holocaust, the United States and immigration. She has traveled widely in Eastern Europe doing onsite archival research and accompanying clients on ancestral home visits.

JewishGen announcement: Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection

JewishGen announcement: "We are pleased to announce a partnership between JewishGen.org and Dr. Dan Hirschberg, resulting in the Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection.   As a result of this agreement, records that have been transcribed and compiled by Dr. Hirschberg will be made freely available to JewishGen researchers.   All of the records are from Kraków, Poland (in the Austrian province of Galicia before WWI), including Kazimierz and Podgórze (today, districts of Kraków). Thus far, more than 160,000 records have been uploaded, which include census records, vital records, marriage intentions/banns records, along with progressive and religious marriage records.   Images of most of the records are available online, although search results do not currently link to the images. Prof. Hirschberg's website ( https://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow ) contains many images and links to images on other websites. Vital records can also be viewed on the Polish State Archives'

Sephardic World: David Baruch Louzada - A Sephardic Life - Sunday Jan 3, 2021

From Ton Tielen and David Mendoza: David Baruch Louzada - A Sephardic Life Happy New Year! Our first talk of 2021 showcases what we can all achieve through innovative research. David Baruch Louzada (1640–1699), like other Sephardim of his generation, was an ordinary person living in extraordinary times. His life has been researched by his descendent, Julian Land. Julian will discuss not just David's family and commercial life, but also his social and communal activities. David Baruch Louzada travels took him to Livorno, France, Amsterdam, and across the Atlantic to Barbados at a time when most people rarely went more than a day's walk from home. Julian's research illustrates available resources. Time: Sunday Jan 3, 2021. 2pm NYC, 7pm London, 8pm Amsterdam/Paris, 9pm Jerusalem. Sephardic World - The Dutch Pimentel family - History and Holocaust - Sunday 10 Jan 2021

From Ton Tielen and David Mendoza: "This week we bring you three expert speakers. The Pimentel are one of the oldest Sephardic families in The Netherlands. Henk Dijkman will discuss the family history, stretching back to Medieval Spain. Fokko Weerstra tells the story of Jacques Pimentel during the Shoah. Along with some other Sephardim, he tried to use his distant Catholic ancestry to escape deportation to Poland by the Nazis. Esther Shaya discusses Henriette Pimentel - one of the unsung heroes of the Holocaust - who saved the lives of six hundred children being held prisoner at the Hollandsche Schouwburg-theatre. We are hoping to trace people saved by Henriette and their family members. If you know anyone, please forward this message.
