JGSGB EE SIG - Nov 15th 2020 2pm – with Carole Shaw – “Travels in Latvia, Ukraine & Poland - In search for the Elusive Family”

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is an extra meeting from the JGSGB Eastern European Special Interest Group (EE SIG) by Zoom.

This is the second of three speakers on Eastern European ancestral tourism in November, making it Ancestral Tourism month!

Don’t forget there is also an Anglo-Jewish Special Interest Group meeting coming soon. Lots more details about subsequent meetings will follow in the coming weeks.

Here is the information for the next meeting:

• Date: Sunday Nov 15th 2020
• Time: 14:00 London
(note, 09:00 New York, 06:00 San Francisco)
• Title: “Travels in Latvia, Ukraine & Poland - In search for the Elusive Family”
• Speaker: Carole Shaw
• Description: This talk will launch in Great Britain, with Carole’s initial forays into the wild world of genealogy, quickly migrating to Latvia, Ukraine and Poland, which she visited in 2019, on a quest for family and Jewish history. Some of this should dovetail with Leigh Dworkin’s talk on 1st November as it includes the vast metropolis of Lomza and environs. Hopefully, there will be tips on how to further your own research into the deepest depths of former Soviet-related climes.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A and discussion on the talk.

About Carole Shaw
Although possessing and professing a general interest in this field, Carole got seriously involved in genealogy as a result of tracking down long-lost and discovering unknown relatives in 2018. Her main and most up-to-date tree is on MyHeritage, with smaller versions on Ancestry and Geni. The latter chance encounter led to some unexpected discoveries of further relatives, and fuels the controversies on the merits of Geni vs the rest. She has attended My Heritage Live in 2018 and 2019 and would have been in Tel Aviv this October, were it not cancelled.

A linguist proficient inter alia in Russian, German and Yiddish, she is also a sometimes comedian with a mean line in Jewish jokes.

The invitation to register is below, but please keep it to yourself!

If you have problems joining, please email chairman@jgsgb.org.uk, preferably in the 15 minutes before the meeting proper starts.

JewishGen announcement: Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection

JewishGen announcement: "We are pleased to announce a partnership between JewishGen.org and Dr. Dan Hirschberg, resulting in the Dr. Dan Hirschberg - Kraków Collection.   As a result of this agreement, records that have been transcribed and compiled by Dr. Hirschberg will be made freely available to JewishGen researchers.   All of the records are from Kraków, Poland (in the Austrian province of Galicia before WWI), including Kazimierz and Podgórze (today, districts of Kraków). Thus far, more than 160,000 records have been uploaded, which include census records, vital records, marriage intentions/banns records, along with progressive and religious marriage records.   Images of most of the records are available online, although search results do not currently link to the images. Prof. Hirschberg's website ( https://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow ) contains many images and links to images on other websites. Vital records can also be viewed on the Polis...

New database for Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery

From David Shulman: What better way to start the New Year other than with a brand new database! A newly-created searchable database, hosted by JCR-UK, is now up and running. The database, relating to burials at Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery, covers the period 1852 through July 2020 and contains nearly 1,800 burial records, with some 1,470 headstone images. It can be accessed at: https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Cemeteries/Cardiff/Highfield_Road_Cemetery/Cemetery_Menu.htm Search results also include coordinates for each individual grave (accurate to about one metre) together with a link to a Google satellite image of the cemetery showing the location of the grave. The creation of the database is part of a project to digitalise the records of all Jewish cemeteries in South Wales and complements a major project by the Jewish History Association of South Wales to collect reminiscences and artefacts and physical items from the numerous Jewish communities in South Wales (...
