JGSGB: Notice of AGM 15 September 7.30pm

The 2020 AGM was to have been held on 10th May but, as a consequence of  the Covid-19 lockdown and in accordance with guidance issued by the Charity Commission, the Society’s Council agreed to its postponement.

Council had hoped that it would be possible to hold a face-to-face  annual meeting by the autumn but now accept that this will not be possible. It has, therefore, decided to hold a virtual meeting using Zoom.

The AGM will be held on Tuesday, 15th September at 7.30pm. The purpose of the meeting is:

• to elect the officers of the Society (Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer) and up to 6 ordinary members of Council. Nomination forms may be obtained from the Secretary (secretary@jgsgb.org.uk);

• to consider a proposal by Council to amend the Constitution to allow for participation in general and Council meetings by electronic means.

Papers will be circulated to all members in advance of the meeting.

If you wish to register in advance for the JGSGB AGM on Sep 15, 2020 07:30 PM London go to:

________________

Note: The officers are elected annually for a term of one year only, with no limit on re-election. The Chairman (Leigh Dworkin), Secretary (Martin Hill) and Treasurer (Peter Heilbrunn) are offering themselves for re-election. Nominations are invited from members of JGSGB for all three posts.

Members of Council, which is the governing body of JGSGB, are elected for two-year terms. Consequently, Lydia Collins, Daniel Morgan-Thomas, Geoff Munitz and Anthony Rosenthal who were elected in 2018 have to retire from the Council at the AGM, although they may offer themselves for re-election. Anita Benson, Jessica Feinstein. Laurence Harris, Marie-Anne Knight and Anne Marcus are members until 2021. Nominations are invited from members of JGSGB.

Completed nomination forms must be received by the Secretary by Friday 28th August. Nominations cannot be accepted at the AGM.

If you have any questions, please let me know at secretary@jgsgb.org.uk

New database for Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery

From David Shulman: What better way to start the New Year other than with a brand new database! A newly-created searchable database, hosted by JCR-UK, is now up and running. The database, relating to burials at Cardiff’s Highfield Road Orthodox Jewish Cemetery, covers the period 1852 through July 2020 and contains nearly 1,800 burial records, with some 1,470 headstone images. It can be accessed at: https://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Cemeteries/Cardiff/Highfield_Road_Cemetery/Cemetery_Menu.htm Search results also include coordinates for each individual grave (accurate to about one metre) together with a link to a Google satellite image of the cemetery showing the location of the grave. The creation of the database is part of a project to digitalise the records of all Jewish cemeteries in South Wales and complements a major project by the Jewish History Association of South Wales to collect reminiscences and artefacts and physical items from the numerous Jewish communities in South Wales (...
