JGSGB EE SIG - July 26th 2020 2pm – with Leigh Dworkin – “Udla, Udla, Udla! – the Szatkowskis of Lask, Piotrkow, Poland”

Our next meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is an extra meeting from the JGSGB Eastern European Special Interest Group (EE SIG) by Zoom.

•       Date July 26th 2020
•       Time 14:00 London
•       Title: “Udla, Udla, Udla! – the Szatkowskis of Lask, Piotrkow, Poland”
•       Speaker: Leigh Dworkin
•       Description: One man’s quest to break through 3 seemingly impenetrable
brick walls to research the Szatkowski family from Lask, near Lodz in central Poland. The research involved using the jri-poland website, the Polish State archives website, FamilySearch microfilms, visiting Polish archives and cemeteries as well as taking advantage of extensive learning from the IAJGS (International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies) conference in Warsaw. “Udla” is the name of the presenter’s great-great grandmother.

We hope this talk will inspire others to go on a similar journey to find out more about their own relatives.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A on the talk.
This will be followed by a short 15 minute break.
The meeting will conclude with a vibrant workshop on matters Eastern European, when you should feel free to bring your successes and brick walls to share, if you like. It’s fine to just listen to the discussion too.

JGSGB Specialist Talk – Sun May 8th 2022 2pm – “The Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls, Women and Children” by Dr Martin Walsh

Our next Sunday meeting in the JGSGB Virtual Meeting Programme is a specialist talk by Zoom. • Date: Sunday May 8th 2022 • Time: 14:00 London; 09:00 New York; 16:00 Jerusalem; 15:00 Switzerland • Title: “The Jewish Association for the Protection of Girls, Women and Children” • Speaker: Dr Martin Walsh • Description: Almost all Jewish women entered England through London’s East End, where a cross-section of the poorer and working-class Jewish community resided. It was a dangerous and overcrowded place with its warren of lanes and criminality; most noted for the Jack the Ripper murders of the late 1880s. Many of the promises of marriage and employment never materialised. Worse still, some of these women arrived in London only to end up on the next boat to South America as part of the white slave trade. Even in London there was a real risk of these women ending up in the clutches of brothel keepers when the promised employment fell through and family members were not there to p...
